Moissanite is naturally occurring silicon carbide and its various crystalline polymorphs. It has the chemical formula SiC and is a rare mineral. The crystalline structure is held together with strong covalent bonding similar to diamonds, that allows moissanite to withstand high pressures up to 52.1 gigapascals.

Moissanite is regarded as a diamond alternative, with some optical properties exceeding those of diamond. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness moissanite is rated as 9.25, with diamond being 10. Because of its hardness, it can be used in high-pressure experiments, as a replacement for diamond.

Moissanite is typically colorless, but can also be found in a range of colors, such as yellow, green, and gray. It has a higher refractive index than diamond, which means it has more brilliance and sparkle than a diamond of the same size and weight.

In terms of cost, moissanite is more affordable than diamonds, making it a popular choice for those looking for a high-quality gemstone without the high price tag.

In recent years, lab-grown moissanite has become more common, with many jewelers now offering it as an eco-friendly and ethical alternative to mined diamonds. Lab-grown moissanite is chemically and physically identical to naturally occurring moissanite, but is created in a controlled laboratory environment.
